Merlin rewatch -- S3E9: Love in the Time of Dragons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite the awful training scenes, the little friendly talk right after was pretty nice. It’s all down to Bradley’s acting that made me instantly forget Arthur’s (objectively) awful behaviours and jumped to the mindset of Merlin-Arthur-BBF.
Tumblr media
He got that soft smile already when he came over to check on Merlin and his tone of complaint was not at all harsh. It really made me forget that he’s the one who knocked Merlin down the floor and believe that’s just their normal interaction and either Merlin was fine with it or Arthur just didn’t get it (although he really should. It’s s3 after all). How did the writers and directors seeing that beautiful portrayal and still decides bullying was the way I have no idea.
Tumblr media
When Arthur asked Merlin what’s wrong it was actually kind of gentle too, despite his word choices. He did threaten him a bit but his face was so soft and inviting. So Merlin shared his struggles and Arthur tried to give advice from his experience too, even though it may not be super useful. Nice friendship moment.
Tumblr media
“Cheer up, will you~”
The awkward shoulder pump was so cute! He tried. He really did. It wasn’t easy for him ok! Always love the way his face twitching with nerve. Good on Merlin to tell him it wasn’t the way though haha. Colin’s utterly confused voice was so funny.
Tumblr media
"It works with the knights"
Aww baby he’s so confused and disappointed. Precious boy. Even when he was annoyed by Merlin’s comment he just gave another friendly punch. Not something more awful. Thank god.
Tumblr media
In fact, the way Bradley played it he didn't look annoyed at all. His face still looked soft and that pout looked more thoughtful or resigned too. Bradley tried so hard to down play the potential abusive acts 😂
I feel like S3 Arthur had this calmer, more low-key playfulness and affection towards others. Really appreciate that while the writers weren’t keen of character development Bradley still managed to make subtle differences.

I will genuinely never let go of that fact that Arthur never found out Balinor was Merlin’s father. fuck the magic, that’s the secret that haunts me the most.
I wish Arthur found out early on, maybe if Merlin snapped after ‘no man is worth your tears.’ And Merlin swears that he did not inherit Balinor’s dragonlord powers (Arthur does not know they are passed father to son) and Arthur believes him.
and then YEARS later Arthur is bleeding out in the finale and Merlin calls Kilgharrah and Arthur is like wait. hold the fuck up. you said you were not a dragonlord
and Merlin’s standing there with the blood of hundreds on his hands, his last remaining sanity hanging by a threat like my brother in christ you cannot actually believe that’s where i drew the line about lying

here is my thoughts on the round table and co relationships
arthur and merlin are married
arthur and gwen are dating
gwen and lance are married
lance and merlin are dating
gwen and morgana are engaged
morgana and leon are dating
all the knights (including arthur) are fwb
percival and gwaine fancy each other but are afraid to admit it even though everyone knows
merlin sometimes sleeps with the other knights but not very often
no one is jealous of anyone

hang on i’m thinking of something and i think i’m cooking with an idea. so we know how the prophecy in merlin went but also i’m just realizing at how much they tell us within the prophecy that the two will fail and etc. arthur is supposed to bring back magic and unite Albion with merlin at his side and i’m just thinking “all of albion is a weird way to word it and bringing back magic considering it's actually been there the whole time” they’re literally setting us up for failure of the prophecy because how can two people (regardless of merlin is seen as a god and all powerful) undo 20 years of hunting down witches and the fear of magic? just how is that possible? it’s not even just about camelot we’re talking about all of fucking albion like how are two people going to go and do that? people have been distrustful of magic for years, magic has been abused by sorcerers and hell there apparently is a hierarchy in magic that we don’t know shit about. like arthur and merlin were set up for failure from the very beginning because how do two people go about doing this?
but also in a way they ended up succeeding between the two of them do you ever think about that? arthur is able to look past his over 20 years of distrust towards magic, merlin in the last few days of arthur’s life proves that he doesn’t want power and he will humbly take care of arthur. and guess what? they do this in a quiet fucking moment! they undo all of these grievances together because they care and love for each other so much that they are embracing every single bit of nuance/conflict between them. they embrace each other even when the two arguably should hate each other! they succeed in loving one another too much!
i don’t think albion is supposed to be just about the two of them but i do think it can be interpreted that maybe the whole prophecy wasn’t about what everyone thought it was about. hell the prophecy is vague as shit and the only complete constant and descriptive detail is what happens when arthur dies. we have the who (mordred), where (Camlann), how (stabbed by sword) and the only thing we don’t have is when which the show does answer at the very end. but the entire prophecy has been vague as shit with what albion means so what if albin is literally just between the two of them? what if they are albion? which gets discredited since albion is an actual title for land but it is interesting to think about: what if the prophecy was not talking about the physical state of albion instead talking about the emotional part of merlin and arthur being albion the entire time?

i only realized the last time i rewatched the series finale that arthur & gwen’s theme is playing in the background FOR merthur…
this basically confirms that this is the moment arthur realizes and accepts that he’s in love w/ merlin. this was so beautifully done im not ok T-T

Arthur( threatening a bandit ): I know 200 ways to kill a man
Merlin (has not slept in days is completely out of it) : You could glue an open jar of rats to his face then blowtorch the other side so the rats have to eat their way out through his face
Arthur (unbothered): 201
Bandit (spills guts)

Merlin rewatch -- S3E9: Love in the Time of Dragons
Arthur regressed to s1e1 level again… possibly worse. He had been doing so well. Now he seemed to be completely in line with Uther’s magic persecution policy and he seemed to be using Merlin as training target in a daily basis. Are you kidding me??
~~~
Tumblr media
If you don’t know what to do with him don’t put him in the scene at all! He didn’t have to be there when Uther asked Gaius to check the magical healer. But no, he’s there and he had to talk. He didn’t think anything about the fact that the sorcerer was helping people with magic instead of causing harm? He had known to differenciate that in s1.
I guess it sort of track with his “character development” since he hadn’t seen a good example of magic for a long long time and the last time he question his father he was utterly betrayed (Morgause).
Tumblr media
I wondered if Merlin even remembered that he wanted Arthur to accept magic. Merlin didn’t have any reaction to Arthur’s lack of protest either. He only critisised Uther in a fairly casual tone.
~~~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then the training bit… ugh. Why the hell was Arthur using Merlin as a training dummy again? Twice!
Tumblr media
And Arthur acted as if it’s a normal occurrence, not that he was mad at Merlin or something.
Tumblr media
He hadn’t done that since s1e2. And in that episode Merlin was at least in armour. And why would Merlin let him do it when he stood up to Arthur in s1e1 because of it? Did Merlin really accept it as his normal duty and not think anything of it? It’s almost as bad as the foot stool scene. It’s only Bradley’s amazing acting that I could forget it instantly when they started an actual friendly talk right after.

The prophecy "ARTHUR AND EMRYS(Merlin) WILL REUNITE ALBION TOGETHER "
Gaius: so obvious you should NEVER tell Arthur about yourself or you know until his death bed or yours which ever comes first
Merlin: what ?
Gaius: oh and clean the leches tank before you leave I'm going to give Morgana her sleeping draught for her nightmares caused by her magic so she doesn't discover it I'm sure nothing bad will happen from that
Merlin: what?!

"What is this Feeling?" from Wicked is SUCH a Merthur song. Like they spend the whole time after their first meeting trying to convince themselves that they hate each other (which obviously isn't true). Especially these lyrics:
"What is this feeling So sudden and new?
I felt the moment I laid eyes on you
My pulse is rushing
My head is reeling
My face is flushing
What is this feeling? Fervid as a flame Does it have a name? Yes! Loathing Unadulterated loathing
For your face
Your voice
Your clothing
Let's just say, I loathe it all! Every little trait, however small Makes my very flesh begin to crawl With simple utter loathing There's a strange exhilaration In such total detestation It's so pure! So strong! Though I do admit it came on fast Still I do believe that it can last And I will be loathing Loathing you My whole life long!"

i don’t think people realize how poetic it was to make merlin and arthur be the once and future king and emrys. like yeah that’s what they are in arthurian lit but the way bbc merlin did it was actually really fucking poetic. arthur was the son of the king who banned all magic and merlin was magic itself. the two of them were supposed to hate each other: merlin at arthur for ya know being the son of someone who’s that cruel. arthur at merlin for growing up thinking that magic is evil. and then there’s a beautiful story of no actually they didn’t hate each other hell they loved one another so much that they would move the entire fucking earth for each other. they would sacrifice and live for one another again and again. and it’s just soooo emotional because in the end when arthur finally knows he accepts it. hell merlin already accepted it a while ago with arthur but arthur in the end loves merlin enough to overcome decades of believing that magic is all evil in the span of three days simply because he could see the beauty of magic through someone he loved and who loved him so fucking much. it just makes me actually want to cry
